Once a year in November, the English Village of Albright bubbles to life with 16th century-inspired royals, dancers, glass blowers, jugglers, Vikings, Celts, period food, theater, games and educational demonstrations. The village is a 16-acre plot of land, surrounding a small lake located in the center of the property. It’s a visual experience to stroll amid pine trees, nestled around the mostly permanent structures that are period, accurate.

To cosplay or not

As you would expect, there are countless volunteers and workers decked out in full costumes throughout The Louisiana Renaissance Festival.  Dress includes a wide assortment of costumes from pirates, steampunk, knights in armor, simple medieval renaissance peasants, Scots in kilts, and characters dressed as royalty.

What is interesting, is that not only are the workers of RenFest dressed in costumes, but also many attendees.  Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory. You will see men walking into the festival wearing a kilt while holding the hands of little princesses and even a little Iron Man.  Each weekend offers a different theme, which opens up various costume choices. Feel free to wear your favorite renaissance costume to the festival, you will fit in just fine as it is actually encouraged by RenFest with their daily costume contest held at the Queen’s Stage.

Entertainment and Attractions

Wide range of live entertainment options

The Louisiana Renaissance Festival is a popular event among locals for its 30+ entertainment options. From jousting tournaments and comedic stage acts to musical performances and interactive storytelling, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Visitors can immerse themselves in the magical atmosphere of the Renaissance era and experience captivating performances by talented actors, musicians, and performers. Some of the past entertainment included:

  • Jousting: This is by far the top event to see.  The Jousting Arena is set up at the far end of the property and has several bleachers set up for viewers.  The show is great.  In this event, an emcee serves as a commentator while two knights make an appearance with their distinctive colors. The emcee then encourages the audience to support their preferred knight. The event involves jousting, where the knights charge at each other on horseback, attempting to strike their opponent with lances, gaining points in the process. Additionally, there is also close-quarters combat. Alongside the thrilling action, the knights entertain the crowd, evoking laughter with their antics.
  • Falconry Show: Another great show at the Jousting arena that has falcons, owls, and hawks flying freely in this demonstration.  Nearby is a tent where you can see these magnificent birds on their perches before and after performances. You can also have your picture taken with some of them.
  • Pandorium Belly Dancing: Over by the Lakeview stage, you can watch gypsies belly dancing.  What is great is not only do they do the typical belly dancing to the accompanying troubadour band but they also tell stories with their dances that kids of all ages enjoy.
  • Shakespeare Approves: If you’re looking for a humorous take on Hamlet, then this is the perfect performance for you. William Shakespeare himself takes the stage as the host, narrating the story of Hamlet with audience members playing the roles of his characters. Its a great way to get the family involved and laugh the whole time.
  • Haller Glassblowing: Observe the skilled glassblower, Mark Haller, as he crafts blown glass using the off-hand technique, all while captivating you with explanations and anecdotes about this ancient art form and his own experiences.  Questions are encouraged!
  • Washing Well Wenches: Live, love, laugh, launder…repeat. This comedy troupe turns washing clothes and husband hunting into a hilarious art form.
  • Whiskey Bay Rovers: Louisiana’s sole pirate band is the Whiskey Bay Rovers, known for their expertise in performing drinking songs, sea chanteys, ballads, and pub songs. With their diverse musical backgrounds, the band aims to honor the songs of the past while also introducing fresh compositions and infusing modern elements into traditional tunes. Employing many acappella arrangements with up to six part harmonies while using instrumental accompaniment of guitar, penny whistles, drums, and recorder on others, the Whiskey Bay Rovers provide a variety of song styles to quench your thirst for the sea.

Interactive experiences, rides and games

In addition to the live entertainment, the festival offers a variety of interactive experiences and games that appeal to everyone. Attendees can try their hand at archery, test their skills in axe throwing, or participate in medieval-themed contests and challenges. These interactive experiences not only provide a fun and unique way to engage with the festival, but they also allow participants to step into the world of the Renaissance and embrace the spirit of the event.

The rides are not only interesting to watch, but also enjoyable to take part in.   Various carnival rides at today’s festivals may look familiar, yet their mechanisms are reminiscent of yesteryear.  You can ride a merry-go-round pulled by miniature horses, a sea dragon fashioned after a hippogriff and swung by pulleys, or a tea cup-shaped ride called the Crow’s nest, which is spun by men using a pole, ropes, and pegs.  There are also a few rides inspired after the Renaissance period, such as the Sliding Joust, in which riders slide down a track on wooden horses while wielding lances and trying to spear a hoop held by an opponent riding in the other way.
